In the late 1980s I had five tanks, ranging in size from 2 to 55 gallons, including fresh, brackish, and salt water. After the hassle of moving all these tanks several times, I came to my senses and went fish-free. This was a good move, but ultimately doomed to failure - I had to have fish again! This time I started out small. Really, I did. It's not my fault that my fish needed more room! I initially bought a little 1/2 gallon Dual Betta Hex tank, divided to hold two betta splendens (named, creatively enough, Red Fish and Blue Fish). Each fish only had a quarter gallon of water, but compared to the tiny cups they were sold in, this was an improvement! Plus, frequent water changes on a tank this size were really easy. The bettas were both happy, but I wasn't. My sense of whimsey kicked in, so I upgraded them each to their own one-gallon plastic cookie jar. Water changes weren't so critical as before, but still very easy. Both fish thrived, and I added a pair of otocinclus catfish to each tank to help keep the algae under control. The fish were still very happy. I still was not. Finally, I succumbed to the inevitable, and got some Real Tanks. |
