Redneck Trailer

Bitch Trailer

This past weekend we drove down to Wilmington, Illinois to take a look at the Kankakee River, which has been threatening to flood there because of a buildup of ice dams. I like all things relating to heavy weather, so this was kind of a must-see for me.

It’s remarkably hard to get directly on the bank in much of the town, but right out in the middle of the river is an island, with parks on both the north and south ends. Both of the parks were completely flooded, which was kind of impressive to see, but you still couldn’t get a good view of the ice dams from the park access roads. Also on this island is a disreputable little trailer park, which at first glance looks like it might actually be a junkyard. I can’t help but wonder why the town hasn’t condemned it and turned it into more park land.

Anyway, we drove in there and found a perfect spot to view the river. The first thing I saw when I got out of the van was the trailer in the image above. Naturally, I couldn’t resist taking the photo. I figure either someone was pretty mad at whoever lived there, or maybe down at the other end is spray painted “dirtbag”. Kind of his-and-hers designated parking for the trailer set.

So we did our bit, looked at the ice on the river, took some photos, and turned to leave. Standing by the trailer door was a bona-fide redneck, loudly telling some friends “He better not be takin’ no pictures of my fuckin’ house”. He repeated it several times, clearly wanting to get some reaction from me, or intimidate me, or something. Sorry fella. 1) It isn’t a house, it’s a trailer. And a crappy one at that. 2) Way too late, dude. That ship already sailed. 3) I’ve got the same build, same messy beard, and same disheveled long hair, so your appearance isn’t the least bit threatening to me. Though I do at least have a passing acquaintance with soap.

Ah well, at least I got one interesting picture that day.

Why do my projects always get out of hand?

It started simply enough – I got new grips and a throttle boss from Küryakyn for Christmas. Before I installed them on my scooter, I figured I ought to get some grip heaters, too. On those cold rides it doesn’t seem to matter how thick my gloves are – my hands always freeze. So I bought some Polly heaters to install inside the handlebars.

So far, so good. But the heaters need power, of course, so I started looking into how to wire them. There are good resources on-line for this at Burgman USA, and I soon worked out that I’d need to run power from the battery beneath the seat to the dashboard, through a relay hooked to the 12VDC outlet (so that the new stuff I’m wiring in would only be on when the bike is running), and into a fuse/distribution box. From that, I could finally connect a switch and get the heaters working.

Pulling the wire proved to be tricky. I had to remove several panels, and finally managed to snake a wire through the toughest area. Having done that, I decided I never wanted to do it again, so I stopped work for a week to think about what else might I want to put in at least provisional wiring for while I was at it. Ah, I know – an additional 12VDC socket in the under-seat compartment, and running light LED strips (fore and aft). While shopping for the LED strips at Oznium, I also found a 5×5 LED array to replace the under-seat lighting, short LED strips for added turn signals along the edge of my mirrors, and some nifty lighted rocker switches. And since I’ve got the dash off, I might as well hook up a cable to power my GPS receiver while I’m at it.

Sheesh.

So, it went from just “new grips and throttle boss”, to “new grips, throttle boss, grip heaters, 6 different LED strips, an LED array, several fancy switches, GPS power cable, 12VDC outlet, fuse panel, relay, and a dizzying collection of sundry wires and connectors”. All things considered it’s still a reasonably cheap project, but what started as an easy afternoon bit of tinkering is now on its third weekend. Good thing it’s winter. Or maybe that’s the problem – since I can’t ride my bike, I have to find some other way to play with it instead. Which would explain the ClearView windshield I installed last month, and the Givi E52 top box I installed the month before that.

Which Photo Do You Prefer?

In October I was staying with my in-laws in Oro Valley, Arizona. They’ve got a great view of some local mountains, and one evening the sunset was just about perfect. I shot a bunch of photos, and did two different treatments of the best one in Photoshop, one with a reddish cast and the other in blue. I can’t decide which one I prefer…

I guess both work pretty well. I lean more towards the blue one, but the red version is probably more “Arizona-ish”.
